Nakakakilabot! Magnitude 8.0 earthquake tatama sa mindanao soon!

Experiencing earthquake can be everyone's worst nightmare. Scientifically speaking, Earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.

Recently, one social media post has claimed that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake will struct Mindanao following the recent magnitude 6.4 quake that affected Tulunan, Cotabato.

However, this claim was false. In a recent report, a Facebook page named "Ozamiz Spy" posted the claim on October 29. 


"Prepare for the worst," it captioned.

"Mati, DAvao, Tulunan, Sarangani and Zamboanga fault lines can generate up to 8 magnitude earthquake and thousands of aftershocks. Please be ready at all costs, it was been proven by Digos veteran seismologists." It also claimed that the warning was from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Later on, on another report, the NDRRMC released an official statement that they did not make an announcement about the alleged magnitude 8.0 earthquake that will hit Mindanao. However, NDRRMC has already warned the public about the social media pages that posts false announcement and hoaxes about disasters and should not be believed.




"The NDRRMC does not send messages of the sort. Currently, there is no technology that allows the prediction of earthquakes. Your NDRRMC will never send baseless messages that will only spread among our people," NDRRMC said.

On the continuation it also that, "The NDRRM Operation Center did not receive such advisory from Phivocs nor did the Council request transmission of the same by the telcos to their subscribers."



The NDRRMC is responsible to prepare for, and respond to natural calamities like typhoons and earthquakes. While PHIVOCS or the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is the one responsible for ptincipally mandate to migitate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic phenomena.



On the other hand, netizens should be aware between legitimate pages and the fake ones. As the people of the internet, we should be a responsible users and should be mindful on what to believe in to avoid false alarms and spreading rumors that can lead to risks.
